How good is SDSU gonna be?

Historically, San Diego State does not do the Marriott Center very well.

The Aztecs (14-4, 4-0) play BYU (13-5, 2-1) tonight at 6 p.m. in a game that will air on The Mtn., if you can receive it.

BYU owns a 40-20 advantage over the Aztecs in a series that dates back to 1941 BYU is 25-3 against SDSU in Provo and a respectable 15-16 in San Diego.

Last year, a decent SDSU team lost to BYU in Provo 86-74. The leading scorer for the Cougars was Rashaun Broadus. It turned out to be his last game in a Cougar uniform because that weekend he got in trouble and was dismissed from the team.

SDSU? Talented enough.

This Aztec team’s 4-0 start is the best by SDSU at this stage of a league race since the Mountain West began in 1999. The last time the Aztecs were 4-0 in conference play was 1984-85 when in the WAC.

At 14-4, this is the best start by the Aztecs in 41 seasons. You’d have to go back to 1966-67 to find a better beginning for a season for SDSU, that’s when they began 15-3.

Trent Plaisted said he could care less about his numbers. “All I care about is if BYU wins.”

The last time Plaisted came out in the Marriott Center, he scored 25 points to lead the Cougars past Colorado State. He ranks second in the league this year behind UNM’s J.R. Giddens for double-doubles with four. Giddens has six. Plaisted (15.4 ppg) is fifth in the league in scoring behind CSU’s Marcus Walker (17.2 ppg), Wyoming’s Brandon Ewing (16.9 ppg, TCU’s Henry Salter (15.4 ppg) and teammate Lee Cummard (15.6).

It would only take a couple of big games for Plaisted to regain the best average in the league.

But, as he says, he doesn’t care, he’d rather enjoy some wins.

Tonight is a big one. BYU protects its home turf and they’ll continue to be looked upon as a favorite.
