Who'll be the biggest impact recruit?
Which recruit in the class signed by the Cougars in February will make the biggest impact this fall?
No brainer. It will be Bingham kicker Justin Sorensen. If not by his field goal range (63 yards), it will be kickoffs. He should put more than half of his kickoffs through the end zone, according to his coach Dave Peck.
In 2006, the Cougars won the MWC and finished 11-2 but a big problem was depth on kickoffs where opponents would regularly get first and 10 from about the 40 to 45 yard line. In 2007, the Cougars won the MWC again and finished 11-2 but routinely allowed opponents to receive and advance kickoffs at the 35 to 40 yard line.
If Sorensen can put 50 percent of his kicks out of the end zone, that alone will give the Cougars a significant defensive advantage over the past few seasons, forcing opponents to have a longer field to drive and score.
On Wednesday, a rumor surfaced that Sorensen had broken his ankle playing rugby. Wrong. He does play soccer and according to Peck, he may have tweaked his ankle but he attended soccer practice on Wednesday afternoon. His health was also confirmed by BYU recruiting coordinator Paul Tidwell Wednesday night. Sorensen is also involved in a weight lifting competition and is going for a record mark.
“I saw him power clean 350 pounds,” said Peck. “I’ve never seen a high school athlete do that before, it was impressive.”
