Chambers disappointed in his state track day
Tis the season for spring sports and at least one of BYU’s recent football signees had a rough time trying to set a meet record due to some bad luck.
O’Neill Chambers, a wide receiver from Harmony, Fla., hoped to soar over the high jump bar at 7 feet this week. A series of incidents on the day of the meet may have hampered his efforts.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, Chambers got into a car accident on his way to the meet. He was not injured, but he ran late for his first event after getting a ride from his father.
The paper reported Chambers then injured his knee before the long jump, placing seventh in the long jump with a mark of 22-8 1/2 .
Apparently the knee pain hampered Chambers in the high jump, his signature event. He finished fourth with a 6-6 leap, well below his goal of leaping seven-feet.
Florida coach Urban Meyer ticked off Chambers when he said during a recruiting call that he wasn’t fast enough to play for Floriday. Chambers hoped to post some speedy times in the relay in which he qualified, but ended up being involved in a costly error instead.
Harmony’s 4 x 100 relay team was disqualified in the finals because of a bad handoff between Chambers and Nate Beatty outside of zone two, according to the Orlando report.
“I’m really frustrated because I feel like I could have done much better if I was at full strength,” Chambers said. “It wasn’t my day, but I still feel like I had a good senior year.”
