Haws has his feet on the ground
Quincy Lewis believes his star Lone Peak High guard Tyler Haws will taste the waters of summer basketball with an attitude that it won’t dominate his life – what comes will come.
Lewis has given all his players including Haws a deadline of Oct. 1 to shut down recruiting contact and, if appropriate, declare what school they will sign with. After that date, they belong to the Lone Peak High basketball program in preparation for a championship.
Haws was named Mr Basketball by the Deseret News this past winter.
Haws has a couple of tournament dates on his calendar in coming months. He has accepted an invitation by the NBA Players Association to attend their Top 100 camp June 18-21 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He will play with the Salt Lake Metro AAU club at least once in July and will go with the Lone Peak High club to a tournament in Kansas City, also in July.
While Haws has received offers from Utah, BYU and Stanford, his teammate Nate Austin recently pledged to sign with the Cougars.
“They really have their feet on the ground,” said Lewis of summer play and exposure. “They aren’t like some of these other clowns. They go out and say if people see them and if they get more offers fine, but if not, that’s OK, they already have solid offers.
“They aren’t going out there with the attitude they need to sell themselves to the world. They’re pretty level-headed about it.”
As reported here earlier, Stanford, who went through a coaching change after the season, has not contacted Lewis about Haws since the change. At this stage of recruiting, colleges are restricted from direct contact and it is normal to funnel contact through the high school coach, except for mail.
