Cummard still looking for opportunities

Lee Cummard did not get invited to the Orlando NBA pre-draft camp that begins Tuesday.

Read his thoughts in Sunday’s column.

This is strike one against his possible drift to a professional basketball career and a return to BYU for his senior year. The next marker will be workouts. He is allowed to work out for NBA teams if he pays his own way, or if they show up and work him out in Provo and there is no expenses.

Cummard said over the weekend he has had some contact with some NBA teams through Dave Rose, his coach. He also believes he’s a winner either way.

Statistically, Cummard is far more “recordable” in numbers than Trent Plaisted, but because of Plaisted’s height and foot speed, he has been invited to Orlando and is expected to be one of 64 invited guests by the league’s 30 teams. Although Plaisted’s draftability is up for serious argument, fact is, he’s already cashing a pay check as an advance from his agent. He is a professional looking for a paying contract.

Now for the questions at hand.

Should Lee ride this out to June 16, the last day he can withdraw his name from the draft and stay eligible for college? Or should he pull out now if the workouts are not on the calendar?

Who do you think will ultimately make more money in professional basketball, from the NBA to Europe, Plaisted or Cummard?
