Max Hall OK after big hit
Max Hall took a huge hit Saturday and was a little shaken up after the game, assuring his mother he was fine after a bout of dizziness during a post-game interview.
But on Monday, he took the the field for a brief practice and was fine. Jeff Call will have more on today’s practice later.
In the meantime, it’s always a jockeying for position when league honors are handed out and with Utah’s huge win at Michigan and career reception day by BYU’s Dennis Pitta, both sports information directors presented their cases on Sunday.
The MWC decided Ute QB Brian Johnson would get the nod for his sixth career passing day over 300 yards. In Pitta’s corner, he broke a league record for a MWC tight end with his nation-leading 213 receiving yards, it was also the third best by a BYU tight end in school history.
Either SID would have been disappointed if their guy had not been honored, in this case it was Jeff Reynolds, who has taken another job and will quit BYU. He has agreed to help with a few more games and will be in Seattle this week.
Reynolds didn’t mind voicing his objection over the selection. But that is also normal for any SID and it happens all over the league every Monday when the honors are dished out. Perhaps if Robert Anae and Hall had kept going to Pitta about 10 more times for a hundred more yards and a score or two, it would have been different.
Personally, I think Louie Sakoda, the Ute kicker won the game for Utah by scoring half the points for the Utes. He did win special team player of the week in the MWC but I believe he could have earned the offensive player of the week honor on his own, deserving it more than Johnson, if you had to go the Ute way on this honor this way.
Here’s a quote from Jeff Reynolds, who doesn’t mind being quoted because he’s out of here:
“Dennis had an amazing day. He was the nation’s top receiver, broke a MWC tight end record and had the third best day for a tight end in BYU football history. While he may not have won the MWC weekly honor this week, there will be plenty of awards, honors and national recognition that will come his way if he continues to play like this. Knowing Dennis, however, he’s not worried about it. He’s already dialed in and preparing for Washington.”
… said Jeff Reynolds. the lame duck BYU SID.
