Chambers looking to improve, get bigger but not too big

O’Neil Chambers would like a couple of moves back on his kick off returns last Saturday and he’s humble enough to admit that if he works hard, he’ll improve.

Chambers currently ranks No. 9 nationally in kickoff returns with a 33-yard average. “If he had cut behind a block or two, he could have really have had a great game. He’s coming along and will improve with work,” said special teams coach Patrick Higgins.

Chambers agrees.

“I have to work better at it, to me that was my bad day, I can do a lot better. It was my first college game, coaches are telling me it was my first outing, it was a good warm up and I could do better. If I had followed my blocker better, I could have had a big play. I would have scored. I’ve got to do it for this game, they tell me if I do, I can do it many times and plenty of times.”

How did he feel about his first college game? Well, he wasn’t a bundle of nerves and he wasn’t scared a bit.

“It field good, I was hyped and ready to play. It wasn’t any different from high school. I was ready to play and I was excited. It comes easy for me because I love playing football. I love going out there and playing the game.”

Even if he got his helmet ripped off on one of his first plays against Northern Iowa.

“The coach says I have good vision for my size and explosiveness and I have fun a the same time.”

Chambers is up to 210 pounds right now. “I’ve put on a little weight, something I always wanted to do in high school and I’ll probably get up to 215.” Chambers said he doesn’t want to get any bigger than that. “I don’t want any more because they’ll put me somewhere else and I don’t want to go anywhere else.”

Chambers said he hopes to make an impact this Saturday in whatever role he is placed in at Washington.

“I watched film on them, their defense looks OK. Their corners don’t look real physical. I want to go out and bang with them, get them afraid, and then use my agility to make some plays.”
