Tyler Haws is the complete package

When Tyler Haws dropped in and committed to Dave Rose Wednesday about 5:30 p.m., he delivered his entire game to the Cougars. And that is what makes Haws a unique player.

One of his biggest admirers is Golden Holt, who has coached youth basketball (AAU)for years and has a strong relationship with both Tyler and his father Marty. He hired Tyler to work at his golf course (Sleepy Ridge) in Orem this summer.

Holt said Tyler Haws couldn’t start on his sixth-grade AAU team and he was frustrated and wanted to get better. He went to his father, Marty and told him he really wanted to play the game and would do everything he could to get better.

“His father then started working on him from the fundamentals first,” said Holt. “If you’ve ever seen on of Marty’s workouts with Tyler, it’s from A to Z.

“You’ll be watching Tyler play and think to yourself, he’s good but he’s nothing special like 40 points a game. But then you look down at the book and see that he’s scored 18 points, haulded down 10 rebounds and had 10 assista and blocked the shot that won the game. He is a complete ball player.

“Marty has really emphasized the team concept, that the team comes first. Everything he’s done with Tyler is in the five-man concept, whether it is defense or offense. That’s why I think he’ll fit in great in BYU’s system, whether its on defense or the motion offense. He’s been trained to play that Hooseir kind of basketball, he makes everybody around him better.”

Holt says Tyler is a strong 6-5 with quickness and speed. “He can really do it all in a game. He is so productive as a player that you think he’s quiet until you look at what he’s accomplished with a double-double and he is an absolute machine on the court.

“He is blessed with skills, but he has worked hard to get his game to where it is as the complete package. BYU is lucky to get him and it will be fun to watch him play,” said Holt.
