Harvey Unga will be day to day

Cougar sophomore running back Harvey Unga sufferred a second stinger to his neck in the San Diego State game. Combined with a shoulder strain he’s been nursing along for weeks, he’ll take a few days off in preparation for the AFA game, according to Bronco Mendenhall.

Max Hall told reporters today Unga was on the sidelines and said he was ready to go back in the SDSU game but medical folks would not let him.

Once a player has a stinger, said Mendenhall, it becomes easier and easier to have a repeat stinger.

Mendenhall expects to know more about Unga’s status on Thursday after he protects him at the first of this week.

Mendenhall said he likes being off the radar screen as far as the highest ranked MWC team. He said it is a position he is more comfortable coaching because he can get the attention of his players.

Mendenhall said AFA’s ability to throw against CSU came primarily out of AFA coaches identifying a vulnerability in CSU’s defense and then exploiting it once they established the run and then play-action passes and it was effective.

Mendenhall noted the Cougars have seen 15 trick plays from opponents in recent weeks who decided to spring those plays on his team. much of a few of last week’s practices were centered on defending trick plays.

Hall said AFA will give the Cougars their best shot and the Cougars will have to bring their best game in order to have a chance to win.
