DB recruit picks BYU over Hawaii

Lee Aguirre, a junior college DB recruit out of Fullerton JC, is expected to make a formal announcement of his college choice (between Hawaii and BYU) today.

Brandon Gurney of Total Blue Sports and Scout.com is reporting Thursday afternoon that Aguirre will sign to play at BYU.

I spoke to several folks at BYU’s practice including one coach. The coach indicated to me he believed Aguirre would chose to become a Cougar.

Another source on the team said Aguirre was the type of person who would fit in at BYU and would be an athlete who would have an easy transition to campus and expectations of Bronco Mendenhall.

Aguirre, who is 5-foot-10, had 17 interceptions at Fullerton, 10 in a record-setting sophomore season playing corner. He tripped to BYU and Hawaii.

You can see a highlight video of Aguirre here.

Jeff Call and I are in the hotel room filing stories after attending practices. Just got word from The mtn that that network received an increase of 78 percent in its average household viewership over 2007 this year. Of course, that has to be due to the infusion of the DirectTV audience and availability.

An average aggregate of 870,000 cable and satellite households turned in to Mountain West Confernce football over 13 weeks and 30 games in 2008 compared to 489,000 from 2007.

Once again, at today’s practice, the issue of BYU underclassmen going to the NFL came up like it has at about every practice since last Wednesday.

Max Hall said as far as he knows, and from the people he has talked to on the team, every one is coming back.

A reporter asked Collie what factors would determine if he would turn pro. Collie answered, “I’m not worried about that right now, I’m just focusing on this football game.”

I asked Dennis Pitta if opening the 2009 season against Oklahoma in a national TV game would give the team a good case to argue for Collie coming back next year. “Yeah, I think it would be, it should be, we’ll see.”
