A conversation with Louis Wong
Norm Chow brought Louis Wong out of the Hawaiian Island of Oahu and he played on the 1984 national championship team at BYU.
Wong is the head coach at Timpview High School in Provo and has been key in leading the Thunderbirds to a fourth-straight 4A state title in Utah. His program is sprouting up Division I players like dandilions in springtime.
I spoke to Wong tonight as he traveled to Park City, doing a little research on recruits and his own situation.
“Right now, I’m a T-Bird, I’m a T-Bird all the way,” said Wong.
I asked him about rumors that he had interviewed for the offensive line job at the University of Utah, working with Kyle Whittingham.
“I have not interviewed for the job,” he said.
I asked him about talk that he would interview for jobs at Idaho State and Utah.
“I do plan on interviewing for the offensive line job at Utah, but I haven’t done so at this time.”
While two of Wong’s players, safety Craig Bills and O-lineman Tui Cruchton have given pledges to sign with BYU, star lineman Xavier Su’a-Filo is still uncommitted and considering offers from USC, LSU, UCLA, Utah and BYU.
Wong said Whittingham made an official home visit to the home of X on Wednesday.
I’ll have more from Wong, his program and his players in coming days.
An interesting note. According to my count, BYU has 20 pledges for far for the Feb. 4 signing date. In an interview with recruiting coordinator Paul Tidwell, he said BYU has 18 pledges with three scholarship offers on the table heading into the final week and a half. The numbers may not be that far off if one considers that some of the committed players (20) that I count may not sign actual letters until they return from LDS missions right out of high school.
