BYU coaches make visits on the North Shore
Call it shoring up one and putting up a last-ditch effort for another.
Jray Galea’i, the safety from Kahuku High School in Hawaii, who committed to BYU early, hosted BYU coaches Brandon Doman and Paul Tidwell in his home Tuesday night and after his basketball game on Wednesday evening, I checked in with him to see if his status had changed.
Galea’i just returned from an official visit to the University of Hawaii with a teammate who is expected to sign with the Warriors next week.
“We had a great visit with the coaches. I am still solid for BYU and they are expecting me to sign, which I will do.”
Galea’i said he is unaware of any new developments with his neighbor and friend, Manti Teo, who accompanied him on an official recruiting trip to BYU on Jan. 9-10. It is expected that the BYU coaches will meet with Teo on Sunday upon his return from an official visit to USC. After that night, the NCAA had mandated a non-contact period with recruits until signing day next Wednesday.
Galea’I plays guard and forward in basketball and after earning honorable mention all-state honors as a junior quarterback, he was asked to play corner back for the Red Raiders this past fall where he earned first-team all-state honors. “BYU coaches want me to play safety at BYU,” he said.
