BYU's Fredette continues to benefit from big game talk
Jimmer Fredette accolades keeping coming. But the sophomore from New York will have to deliver another big game to help the Cougars pull off a win at Wyoming on Wednesday.
During Monday’s conference call with league coaches, Wyoming’s Heath Schroyer and SDSU’s Steve Fisher complimented the BYU point guard for his performances last week.
“He’s a stud,” said Schroyer. “I think Fredette is an all-league player. He’s really crafty with the ball. They do a good job getting him ball screens and getting him in the paint. He’s a big body guard and he can flat out shoot it.”
Schroyer said he was looking at film and stats the other day and with a short laugh, praised Fredette. “He’s shooting almost 40 percent from the three and he can get in the lane. He’s a special player. We’ll try and mix some things up. You can’t do the same things all the time. BYU is a great rhythm basketball team. When they’re in a rhythm, they are impossible to beat. You have to shot them different looks. Show them different things. They make adjustments but they are real good.”
A reporter asked SDSU’s Fisher about Fredette’s performance and if he proved to be a surprise in BYU’s upset win over the Aztecs last week. Fisher made it clear, Fredette is on everybody’s radar and he is considered in the same breath as Lee Cummard and Jonathan Tavernari.
“Most of us who has followed BYU throw Fredette in that same catgory. Everybody knew how good he was. He’s one of the top scorers in New York state history. He has no fear, he is very good. He played his best back-to-back games of the season against us and Utah.
The reporter asked Fisher what was the best way to defend Fredette. “You better ask somebody else. He got a career high against us.”
Dave Rose continued high praise for both Fredette and center Chris Miles this week. Miles, who was key in BYU’s win over Utah last Saturday, was the subject of a feature I wrote for today’s sports section. You can read that story here.
