Mendenhall won't be calling defensive plays

Bronco Mendenhall won’t be calling the defensive plays for the Cougar defenders for the first time since becoming head coach four years ago.

Mendenhall said it may be news to some, but it’s been a work in progress for some time as he’s given more and more responsibilities to his assistant coaches. Defensive coordinator Jaimie Hill will do the play calling this fall.

“I reserve the right to make a call on a third-down situation or something similar. I will now take a kind of role as a consultant,” said Mendenhall.

Mendenhall said the position on defense that requires the least amount of schooling with schemes and formations is the cover corner guy and he’s got five prospects for the one open spot now that Brandon Howard will not return.

Howard was the Cougar starter last year but withdrew from school.

Those candidates include Garrett Nicholson, who was present during spring, JC transfers Lee Aquirre, Corby Eason and Brian Logan and returning missionary Robbie Buckner.

“That is one position that relies most on pure ability and skill to just cover. The other positions do not fit in that category,” said Mendenhall.

The coach said he is very pleased with his safeties, Andrew Rich at strong and free safety Scott Johnson. “Johnson’s true position may not be at free and he’s played corner, but he is one person who has a complete understanding of the entire defense and I like him.”
