Chad Lewis and BYU receivers and tight ends
This summer two-time all-pro tight end Chad Lewis hung around workouts and offered his two cents to BYU players.
Lewis to me Wednesday, right before a Desert Duel red and blue golf tournament at Thanksgiving Point, he enjoyed the experience and was impressed with several of the Cougars.
What does Lewis bring to the table? He advised Dennis Pitta and Andrew George that NFL scouts look for a lot more than statistics and if you catch or drop the ball. They look for attitude, passion and heart, how you carry yourself, if you run back to the huddle, if you are fearless, tireless in how you work and how others respond to you. He told Pitta he could help his stock in the NFL and prepare himself for the next level if he showed how much he had from the chest up (heart and brains).
Lewis’ take on a few players, brief takes in a short conversation:
Pitta: A big time talent who has a chance to do something in the NFL. Great size and hands.
George: A great athlete with a lot of potential to make as many plays as Pitta.
McKay Jacobson: Blown away by Jacobson’s athleticism, precision, speed, hands, concentration. Says he’s got it all.
Brett Thompson: A receiver who is extremely mature as a freshman. Strong, confident and a great work ethic. Brings down the ball with authority, rare for a freshman. Has worked so hard in Provo this summer he’s earned the respect of his teammates who will be supportive if he sees time on the field because he’s convinced them he belongs. “That coach and program that Thompson and Collie came from is doing something right because these two came ready to play.”
Lewis said he plans on hanging around this fall and helping where he can. He has a book coming out soon and will be working on getting that launched.
