Basketball writers salute Dave Rose

At the Final Four in Indy, BYU’s basketball received an honor by the media who cover college basketball.

The following brief occurred in USA Today:

Dave Rose, who overcame pancreatic cancer to guide the Cougars to an NCAA tournament berth this season, was named winner of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association’s “most courageous” award Monday.

At the presentation, made at the USBWA’s annual awards breakfast, an emotional Rose said the award should really go to his wife, Cheryl, who has been “a rock through this.”

Rose, 127-40 in five years at BYU, thanked friends and strangers alike who helped him through his ordeal.

“I would hope we can all be gratified for what we have and what we do,” commented Rose, who said that too often people think back on earlier times in their lives and say, “Those were the days.”

In reality, he said, “These are the days.”
