Alta commit compares to Pendleton, says his coach

Alta High coach Les Hamilton says his junior safety Rhett Sandlin plays and looks like BYU outside linebacker Jordan Pendleton.

Sandlin, who committed to BYU as part of the class of 2012, is 6-3 1/2 and 198 pounds, according to Hamilton and will likely play safety or outside linebacker at the next level. Sandlin started for Alta as a sophomore and like this year junior year, has been the team’s top tackler. He has two interceptions this year, one against Brighton and the other against Bingham. He had two picks a year ago.

Here are the comments from Hamilton this morning:

“Rhett is a phenomenal athlete. He is one of the fastest players in our program. He’s started for us since he was a sophomore. I think he’s going to be a fantastic player for BYU in their scheme as either a safety or outside linebacker position. He really reminds me a lot of Jordan Pendleton of Bingham High School as far as physical ability in high school. It is actually uncanny as to how much he is similar to Pendleton. He’s a good fit at BYU because he’s a BYU guy, so is his family and I think he’s going to bring a high level of athleticism to their program. He’s also a high character kid.”

Of note, this is Hamilton’s final year at Alta. He’s accepted a job to work in Chile where he served his LDS mission and he’ll move there before this fall and give up his job as football coach for the Hawks. He said his new job will take him out of the country for about four years.
